Where can I get dvd2xbox ?

Developers: get the source code from the dvd2xbox project page on sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93608&package_id=99343.
Endusers: get the compiled version at the “usual places”. You get tips about it in every xbox forum or look here http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php .

How do I install dvd2xbox ?

Unrar the dvd2xboxXXX.rar package with Win RAR? and transfer all files and directories to a folder on your xbox hdd. For example: f:\apps\dvd2xbox. Make sure that you get the compiled version with the default.xbe. The archive is round about 1–3MB in size. You can't obtain it from here as it contains copyrighted code.
The dvd2xbox-XXX-src.zip archive is the source code of dvd2xbox (~ 10MB and no default.xbe file). This archive is free available from this side but only useful for developers. Check
the forums to get information about where to obtain compiled versions.

Why does dvd2xbox redirects me to the dash ?

This is mostly due to missing media files in the media directory. Make sure you extract the dvd2xbox archive with all subdirectories.

I updated dvd2xbox to a new version and it hangs at the loading screen

Try cleaning the dvd2xbox save game via the MS dash or by deleting the folders e:\tdata\0facfac0\ and e:\udata\0facfac0\.

Why does dvd2xbox hangs during partition autodetect ?

This might happen on some boxes. Disable autodetection by setting <autodetectHDD>0</autodetectHDD> in dvd2xbox.xml.

Why does the box crash when I insert a new DVD or start with a DVD inserted ?

Reports showed that this might happen on a few boxes. Go to the settings/general and disable the “unlocker”. This should solve the problem.

I changed the skin. When I restart dvd2xbox only a black screen is shown. What can I do ?

dvd2xbox is updated very frequently and if new functions are added sometimes the skin needs to be updated otherwise it won't work or it doesn't display the new function properly.
The default skin should always work and to switch back you have two possibilities:

  1. press left+right trigger and Y together which should start the default skin
  2. delete the dvd2xbox save game

Where is my f: or g: drive ?

Enable the drives in the dvd2xbox online settings menu. Select settings at the main screen and enable the desired drive. Make sure that it is formatted and that you're using the right bios for drives greater than 120 GB. Since 0.6.2 dvd2xbox tries to auto detect the available partition. You can enable the old behaviour by setting <autodetectHDD>0</autodetectHDD> in dvd2xbox.xml.

Is there any explanation of the settings available?

Yes there is: The settings explained.

Which button does what in dvd2xbox?

The interface.

How can I dump a game to the hard drive ?

Start dvd2xbox, put the DVD in your xbox and wait until dvd2xbox has recognize it (the bottom status line will display the size of the game). Highlight «Copy DVD/CD-R to HDD», press A and select the desired destination. Afterwards the full path is shown and you can alter the directory name if you want. Press A again to start the transfer. Dvd 2 xbox will show a result screen when the copy process is complete. It will tell you if some files failed to copy and if some files were renamed due to the fatx limitation.

Should I enable the ACL processing ?

Yes if you want to play the game from you hard drive. No if you want to have a 1:1 copy from the DVD.

What does ACL mean and why do I need it ?

ACL means action control list and you could see it as a batch file where dvd2xbox looks for information on how it should patch the game. Dvd 2 xbox can patch every game individual with acl files in the form [gameID][_pal|_ntsc].acl. Take the game Riddick as example. dvd2xbox tries to determine via the eeprom if your xbox is set to PAL or NTSC (my box is set to PAL). Then it tries to load the ACL file 56550026_pal.acl (since 0.5.9). If it can't find the file it tries to load the ACL file 56550026.acl (default for 0.5.8 and previous versions). If there is no special acl file the default.acl is used. The default.acl contains all known generic patches like media check 1+2 and the fatx detection.

Why do I have to bother with the damn acl files as all other filerippers don't need them ?

You don't have to if you only want the generic patches which are similar to all rippers but don't help for all games. ACL is a gift to the community to extend the capabilities of dvd2xbox without relying on the author.

Where could I get an ACL file for game XYZ?

Check out the common forums (I recommend http://www.xbox-scene.com) if a specific game needs a new ACL. The experts for ACL files can be met there. All new and approved ACL files which are sent to me will be shipped with any new release.

Can I write my own ACL files?

Sure you can but in order to patch games you should have some knowledge about hex edit files: How to write ACL files.

Why is the media folder missing or needed game files are deleted/not copied ?

Check that you get the valid dvd2xbox archive from xbins with the shipped ACL files (compare with the ACL files listed here: http://dvd2xbox.xbox-scene.com/acl/ ). The ACLs stear the behaviour of how dvd2xbox treats a game. Some “funny” dudes released packages which don't copy the media folder or delete other needed files.

Does dvd2xbox patch to run games with renamed files?

In general: NO. In particular: SOMETIMES ;-)
dvd2xbox renames files which doesn't fit to the fatx convention in order to have them on the disk rather than loosing it. There're ACL files for some games which patch the default.xbe to use the shortened filename but this is not the rule. Ask in forums like X-S if unsure.

Where can I change the default dump directories ?

Edit the dvd2xbox.xml file with notepad or similar and add/change the paths you need.
Example:
Add <dir>g:\foo</dir> between the <dumpdirs> tags to enable ripping to g:\foo.

Why does my game backup freeze or simply not work ?

This could have various reasons. A good description is the Xbox Backup Troubleshooting (Game & Movie) on xbox-scene here and my (quick) translation in german here.

How can I rip to my PC ?

Share one of your directories and give it a name (share name). Create a user and give him write and read rights to access the share. You have a second tab on Win XP? in which you've to configure the access rights again. Test if you can access the share and write files on it. Open the dvd2xbox.xml file and put in your workgroup (domain) and the smb URL like described in the config file. Let the network settings as they're as dvd2xbox obtains it from your dash. Now enable the network in the settings menu and you can start ripping by selecting «Copy DVD/CD-R to SMB share» at the main menu.

How can I copy certain files instead of the whole disc ?

Select the filemanager from the main menu and press A. Choose the source drive in one window and the destination drive in the other window by pressing the right trigger. Navigate to the desired directories and select the files you wanna copy with the B button. Press the left trigger and choose copy files and the selected files will be copied to the destination folder.

Why is dvd2xbox so damn slow ?

Is it? The ripping speed depends on various thinks besides the coding. Let's start with the DVD drive. I noticed that my sammy rips a 150MB CD in 1m:50s whereas on my phillips it takes over 2 minutes. So different drives shows different reading abilities which are also depending on the media (DVD,DVD-R, CD etc). The sammy is known to read the most medias pretty fast, the Phillips can read most CDs and the Thomson seems to be really bad with all medias (it can't even read most CDs).
Beside the drive and the media we have the software on the DVD. Are there many thousand small files or several big ones? Small files produce a lot of overhead which takes more time to process (fat refresh, open/close file, etc). In addition dvd2xbox verified every filename if its fatx compliant and if not renames it to not loose it like a few other xbox filemanager. This takes a small amount of time but shouldn't be noticable.

How do I process an ACL file manually after copying a game ?

1) download the ACL file you want to use
2) FTP the ACL file to your xbox and put it in the acl folder of dvd2xbox
3) Start up dvd2xbox, then go to filemanager.
4) In filemanager browse to the folder that contains the default.xbe for the game (note: DO NOT open the folder, just highlight it)
5) Bring up the filemanager menu by pressing Left Trigger.
6) Select Process ACL
That's it! dvd2xbox will automatically find the correct ACL and process it for the correct files.

After ripping a Video DVD it plays in a different language, why ?

Check your mediaplayer. If you use XBMC use its feature to switch the audio channels. dvd2xbox just decrypts the video material and copies the audio layers 1:1.

Can dvd2xbox rip ArccoS protected DVDs ?

No it can't. Prior 0.7.6 dvd2xbox just crashed when encountered a ArccoS protected DVD. With 0.7.7 it won't crash but will skip this file and might render you copy useless.
Please note: Even if all files are in the destination directory with the expected filesize the copy might be useless since dvd2xbox preallocates the files and they keep the filesize even when skipped.

How to speed up the ftp client ?

If you connect to xboxes via a cross connect cable or via a hub you can connect two dvd2xbox instances via ftp. To speed up the transfer between both boxes use the ftp client on the destination box (where the files should be copied), connect to the ftp server on the other xbox, select the files directories which you want to copy on the remote side and copy it to the local disc. Getting files with the ftp client is much faster than “pushing” it. Dunno why.

What about skins ?

dvd2xbox is easily skinable. The syntax is described here: Skin engine overview.

Where can I ask further questions ?
